We will explore the literary form of letters written for publication, and also read personal letters sent more than two thousand years ago. We will explore a treasure trove of ancient letters, including: - Pliny's eye-witness description of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius - Friendly banter and philosophical advice from Horace - Stoic philosophy in Seneca's letters to Lucilius - Letters between the emperor and stoic Marcus Aurelius and his tutor Fronto - Cicero's personal correspondence that reveal much of Roman life and political intrigue - Private letters found in different Roman sites that give us insights into daily life and the real joys and concerns of Romans around the Empire. *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66.
